Choosing your bedroom furniture
November 21st, 2008
If you haven’t been shopping for bedroom furniture lately, you’re in for a real treat. There is an amazing array of styles and furnishings out there, something to fit any homeowner’s personal tastes and budget.
There’s no need to wake up in a cold sweat in the middle of the night either, worrying about how you’re going to sort through the endless choices in nightstands, dressers, stools, wardrobes, chairs and beds. Fortunately, the wise one of the computer age created the Internet, so you can do a lot of your homework right at home (or at work if you’re like most of us).
Begin your adventure in bedroom furniture shopping by figuring out what you need for the bedroom. Do you need a complete bedroom furniture set, additional storage or just some completer pieces?
Once you know what you need, do a little surfing on the old Internet. Look at different styles and types of furniture. Are you drawn to modern bedroom furniture? Traditional bedroom furniture? Contemporary? Antique?
If you look long enough, you’ll start to see that you gravitate toward some styles and shy away from others. Keep a file on your computer of the furniture you liked. Then review it. Look for commonalities. For example, you may be drawn to a certain finish, material or shape. You may like woods over veneers or the modern cleanliness of black and white bedroom furniture.
When the homework is done, it’s time to go shopping. If your mattress is still good, that’s one big expense already taken care of. Just be sure that the bedroom furniture you fall in love with can handle the size of your mattress. Otherwise, you have to replace it too.
There are plenty of stores online where you can shop for furniture. If you have a local favorite, that’s fine too. Local furniture stores usually offer same of next day delivery, which is an added bonus. Plus, you can see the furniture up close and personal, touch it, sit in it or see it grouped with other furnishings.
If you are shopping in a real store, be sure that you’ve measured the room before you head out. Furniture in the store can look pretty small because of the cavernous space it is in. Stick to your measurements and look for nightstands, dressers, wardrobes and other furnishings to fit the space that’s actually available in your room.
Finally, be a smart shopper. Don’t fall for extended warranties if the store’s usual warranty will handle most problems, such as the need to return a piece that doesn’t fit or was damaged during delivery. Also, watch for sales and take advantage of them. Furniture can have some pretty hefty markups and a sales price is a good deal for you and the retailer. You may even find that your favorite piece of furniture can be ordered off the Internet for the same or even a lower price as the local store, including shipping.
With these basic tips in hand, shopping for the perfect bedroom furniture should be a snap. Plus, you won’t wake up in the middle of the night because you’re still having nightmares about making a smart choice.
